AVT Simulation Honored as an Outstanding Veteran Employer

AVT Simulation is honored to have been recognized as an Outstanding Veteran Employer this year. Supporting the warfighter is our business but it means more than just developing technology to help them overseas. We also feel that it means employing Veterans every chance we can. According to Fortune.com, post 9/11 service members have a higher unemployment rate at 7.3% than the rest of the population at 6%. We are glad to say that 15% of our employees at AVT are Veterans. “I make it a priority to hire vets. They are mission-focused and don’t stop at the first obstacle to get the job done,” said Founder and CEO, Robert Abascal. Furthermore, it is not enough to just give these Veterans a chance in the white-collar workforce but to fully support them while under your employment. In a recent survey of 1,022 Veterans, conducted by the Center for Talent Innovation, only 2% say they have an executive that champions and advocates on their behalf. AVT Simulation works hard to be a strong advocate for their Veteran employees and was also recently recognized as a Patriotic Employer by the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

“When I started my position with AVT Simulation in 2010, I was already eleven years into my Marine Corps career.,” said Marketing Manager and current Marine Corps Reservist, Sean Osmond. “Balancing two obligations, civilian occupation and Reserve obligation is always a challenge, but AVT has never wavered in its support of my service. Be it finding coverage for extended annual training, long drill weekends, or needing to take time off to manage my leadership responsibilities, AVT has always been behind me. It isn’t often you find a company that truly backs up what it states as a mission but I have been blessed with an employer that believes in dedication to service members and its employees. I know I would not have been able to be as successful in my Marine Corps career if not for the commitment my employer has shown to me through Veteran friendly hiring practices as well as Revere and Guard friendly corporate policies.” Sean Osmond has been in the Marine Corps since 1999 and has been employed by AVT Simulation since 2010.

Retired Army First Sergeant (1SG) states, “The annual AVT Veteran’s Day Bar-B-Que is equivalent to Army leadership in the field, where senior leaders both Officers and Enlisted must wait until all their subordinates are served their meals before they can eat because they are the ones who work hard for us every day. AVT veterans are holding to that tradition in honoring the engineers who work hard every day to ensure the readiness of our troops across the field, fleet, and wing.” Additionally, AVT Simulation prides itself on being involved with Service organizations across the Central Florida region. AVT is a strong supporter of the Association of United States Army (AUSA), Navy League, Marine Corps, and has the President and VP of Publicity and Membership in the local Army Aviation Association of America (AAAA) chapter. AVT Simulation’s VP of Business Development, Kevin Vizzarri holds the position as President of Central Florida AAAA, as well as, being an active mentor for the local Camaraderie Foundation. This year, AVT was able to help a protegee by providing him an opportunity to come on board as a Finance Intern.

“Veterans are hard-working individuals, they just need to be pointed in the right direction,” said Michael Florer, former Marine and new Finance Intern at AVT Simulation. “For me, [the most challenging part of leaving the Service] was a loss of identity. I knew what was expected of me in the Marines, and I knew how to meet or exceed those expectations. I felt a sense of direction and purpose and the security of a career. This was all lost when I separated from the military. I had to re-calibrate my life to find direction. I linked up with Camaraderie Foundation in order to network with other veterans, to give back to my community through their outreach programs, and to enjoy some of the benefits they offer such as Family Fun Day, Pars & Stripes golf tournament, and other outings. The Mentor-ship Leadership Program offered by Camaraderie Foundation has been invaluable. I got linked up with my mentor, Kevin Vizzarri through this program. He has pushed me to attend networking events that I would have not otherwise attended. He also played a role in me landing my position at AVT Simulation as a Finance Intern. My internship at AVT has helped me with my studies at the University of Central Florida. I will learn about something in class and then come to AVT and it reinforces the lessons from class. My supervisor, Kimberley Sheldon, makes it a point to bring me in on learning opportunities which have not been my experience at other companies. The internship has shown me possible career paths that I never thought of. It has helped me rule out other paths, which is just as important. As far as my personal professional development is concerned, there has been nothing better than my internship at AVT Simulation and I would recommend them to others because the company culture is very veteran-friendly which helped me feel comfortable immediately. As you enter the building you can see the photos on the wall of the former and current military members that work at AVT. The people in the photos range from the top leadership in the company down to the intern.”
